Hi. We’re Mike & Heather Colling. We’re originally from the UK. Heather from Scotland and Mike from ‘south of the border’. We ‘eloped’ to get married in NZ over 30years ago before finally returning to settle permanently with our young daughters, Rebecca & Hannah, 20 years ago. Two of our better decisions! Heather has had a long standing passion for photography, both as a hobby and as a portrait photographer back in the UK. Heather’s passion has now moved on to landscape and bird photography, which requires a lot of early mornings - fortunately she’s a morning person. Mike, on the other hand, is not a morning person (or at least wasn’t). As far as Mike was concerned not only was Heather’s hobby ruining his sleep but also the long walks that we enjoyed - he had to hang around waiting whilst Heather ‘got the shot’ and was often left holding her camera bag (which would turn into carrying it if Heather could get away with it). Eventually Heather convinced Mike to join her on a ‘Picture This’ photography weekend (www.picturethis.kiwi). Mike didn’t know how to use his new camera and had little idea what he was supposed to point it at - but by the end of the weekend he was hooked. We now travel to some wonderful photography locations in our motorhome and it’s great to have a shared interest. Mike still struggles with the early mornings but they are (mostly) worth it (the sunrises are apparently always better when Mike fails to drag himself out lol). Heather is increasingly focused on the very challenging world of bird photography. Mike’s been trying his hand at nightscapes (more of a night person!) and also experimenting with Photoshop and the endless creative opportunities it can offer. There is always something new to learn!
